This is a big "Eureka" forehead slap. Gossip, Ditto's main group, is a Sleater-Kinney-style trio that doesn't quite hook or riff. What they do is vamp. From the start on That's Not What I Heard, they cued to the blues and let Ditto run wild over two- and three-note meditations of Loud that gave their stage show a loose, improvisational feel perpendicular to S-K's tightly controlled racket. But her robust figure, gay iconicity, and tendency to belt instead of screech would have traditionally pegged her as a disco diva. Was it only a matter of time before she gave it a shot? Here she out-lungs her mostly anonymous competition, and SMD percolate behind her with such spring I keep waiting for Los Del Rio to spit game. But while her light approach to Mariah-esque material is presumably a big part of her surprising star appeal, I still long to hear her truly grind: a "Good Luck" or "Do Your Thing". Even a "Rehab".
